Learn About Helmets
Why wear a helmet?
Because you can't put a bandaid on
a brain!
Without a doubt, the most important part
of any ride is a helmet. Even the most mild of crashes can result
in what's called MBI (mild brain injury) which WILL cause nothing
but cognitive problems for the rest of your life.Your more severe
crashes will leave you with a TBI... or traumatic brain injury
which really is as bad as it sounds. No one plans on crashing,
and after untold numbers of crashes wearing my helmet, my nine
lives have thankfully been extended. Real bikers wear helmets,
and so do parents who want to set a good example. They work. Wear
'em. And in case you do endo and crack your helmet, replace it
before your next ride to assure maximum protection.
By the way, Connecticut requires ages under
15 to wear a helmet, but that should become a standard for life.
Children can usually start wearing helmets
around one year, however check with your pediatrician because
each child is different. If putting a child in a baby carrier,
check with your bike shop guy to assure safety, stability and
a good fit of the helmet and baby in the seat.
HELMET STANDARDS:
ANSI:
American
National Standards Institute.
ASTM:
American Society for Testing and Materials.
If you see these abbreviations; ASTM/ANSI,
then your helmet will withstand rigorous abuse.
