KIDS BIKES

Firstly a quick and very simple guide to sizing which although is approximate is a great place to begin

2-4 Years       Tricycle or 12 inch bicycle

4-6 Years       16 inch bicycle with training wheels

6-8 Years       20 inch bicycle with a hand brake and foot brake both at the back, often called a "transition bike" allows them to get used to a hand brake without having to rely on it

or with gears if they are already comfortable with stopping with hand brakes

8 -10 Years    24 inch bicycle with hand brakes only and gears

10 and up      adult bicycle with gears and brakes front and back

Things to consider are the following:

  • Number of kids you have i.e. hand down-ability,
  • Whether the child is the oldest or youngest ,the oldest usually learns later, the youngest is always trying to keep up with big brother or sister
  • Where you live, it's easier to learn in a cul-de-sac than on 5th Ave in Manhattan
  • Ability of the child, nervous and cautious or bordering on having a death wish
  • Growth spurting

If you want to buy the bike as a surprise gift error on the side of caution and go for the smaller size then after wards bring him/her in and we can always trade up if needed

Lastly we recommend to go easy on the accessories to begin with,no bells, horns or things to distract them Remember at that age we had no fear of consequence we rode into parked cars ecause we were looking at the cool bell on the handlebar
